LANSING, Mich. -

The Michigan Department of Agriculture is taking applications for food safety and education grants.

The grants will come from the Food Safety Education Fund, which was established in 2000. Food establishments pay assessments of $3 to $5 on their licenses to fund the program, which presently has about $225,000 available for grants.

They're awarded on a competitive basis to government agencies and nonprofit groups. They pay to educate consumers about food safety and help train food establishment workers and agents who enforce safety rules.

Grant proposals must reach the Department of Agriculture by Nov. 9.
