LANSING, Mich. -

Michigan landfills saw less trash in 2012 than 2011, according to the DEQ's 2012 Annual Solid Waste Receipt Report. 

There was a 3.1 percent overall decrease in solid waste disposed of in Michigan landfills compared to 2011.

Nearly 35 million cubic yards of solid waste made its way to our landfills from Michigan, down about a million cubic yards from 2011.

The largest source of imported waste is from Canada, representing 15.3 percent of all waste disposed of in Michigan landfills.

What may surprise some is that Michigan imports trash from 15 other states, as far away as Florida and Washington. The biggest U.S. exporter of trash to Michigan is our neighbor to the south, Ohio.

Based on DEQ research, current Michigan landfills will be full in 28 years.
