DETROIT -

Detroit Science Center front How could a city built on science, technology and engineering not have a center celebrating all three?

Detroit almost lost it’s science center, until now.

Long gone is the debt ridded Detroit Science Center. Now open is the Michigan Science Center.

With the same location at John R and Warren roads in Detroit, the center has a different name and a completely different philosophy.

When one mom got a card in the mail alerting her that the center was re-opening, she brought her kids here first thing Thursday.

"I think it’s really important to Detroit and it's really a sign of things to come that this place is up and running again and that people cared enough to really make that happen, you know. So it's very encouraging to us," said visitor Angie Amini.

The center shut it’s doors and left parents holding their memberships after mismanaging it’s way to near bankruptcy.

Now comes a host of heroes led by former Republican National Committee Finance Chair, Ron Weiser.

He held off foreclosure, bought the property and sold it back at a loss to a new, leaner board

The center is relying on more volunteers and shedding a side business that was weighing it down financially with help from key corporate donations.

"The support that we've received from all of the organization from Metro Detroit, from Toyota to GM to Ford to ITC, the list goes on and on. It's tremendous and we are so thankful to have them," said Senior Marketing Manager Kerri Budde.

Now kids can come get their hands on real science in the city.

"Our mission is to inspire children and families to pursue careers with stem science technological, engineering and math," said Budde.
