Michigan environmental agency offers grants to help property owners get rid of scrap tire piles

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is offering grants to help get rid of scrap tire stockpiles.
Discarded tires can be taken to processing facilities and ground into bits for other uses, such as layering at landfills and septic systems. They can be burned as fuel at electric power plants or made into asphalt.
The DEQ grants pay to haul and process the tires. Applications are due before Jan. 30.
Owners of property with scrap tire piles are eligible to seek grants. Priority is given to sites where the scrap tires accumulated before Jan. 1, 1991, and at collection sites that pose an imminent threat to public health, safety, welfare or the environment.
The DEQ says its program has made progress toward eliminating stockpiled scrap tires around the state.
