Michigan school district finalist for $40 million federal grant

Newly-created Michigan school district competes for federal funds

WASHINGTON,D.C. – The United States Department of Education announced today that Michigan's Education Achievement Authority is one of 61 finalists eligible for federal funds from the Race to the Top program.

The Department will select as many as 25 finalists to receive between $5 million and $40 million over four years to improve student achievement. Each finalist must demonstrate how their school district could personalize education to close achievement gaps and prepare students for college and future careers.

Michigan's newly created Education Achievement Authority contains 15 low performing schools that were apart of the Detroit Public School system.

The winners of the Race to the Top federal funds are expected to be notified by December 31.
