Five children are recovering after being pulled from a mangled minivan after it crashed Friday morning at an intersection in Chesterfield Township.
The Macomb County Sheriff's Department said a Casco Township mother was taking the children, ages 8 to 13, to school after they had missed the bus.
She was driving south of County Line when she was hit twice in the intersection of 26 Mile Road. The van rolled and pinballed to a stop in a ditch.
The children had to be rescued from the van with the Jaw of Life.
The 11-year-old, 12-year-old and 13-year-old were on their way to Anchor Bay Middle School. An 8-year-old and a 10-year-old were on their way to McConce Elementary School.
The children were taken to Children's Hospital in Detroit. The 11-year-old was hurt the most serious. Their mother has since been treated and released.
Local 4 has learned the name of the children's father, Bill Darrel Halcomb.
Authorities said they were investigating whether the mother might have run a red light or if the traffic lights had malfunctioned.
