Oakland County Commissioner John Scott says another John Scott is trying to run him out of office with fraud
Commission candidate charged with fraud after petitioning under same name as incumbent, John Scott
Oakland County Commissioner John Scott, who is running for re-election, got into a hint of trouble this past summer.
Scott says another John Scott with the middle name of Charles, has been put on the ballot in Oakland County to confuse voters and get him, the incumbent, out of office.
John Charles Scott, a 22-year-old Eastern Michigan University student from West Bloomfield, wanted to get on the ballot as an independent. He was collecting signatures.
The fraud charge comes in when incumbent Scott got a hold of the signatures and found names of his own supporters. He says student Scott was purposely trying to confuse voters in order to get him out of office.
Commissioner Scott, a Waterford Republican, paid a $100 fee by May 15 to get on the ballot. He did not solicit signatures.
The Oakland County chief assistant prosecutor said this type of thing warrants a misdemeanor fraud charge.
It's too late to get the John Charles Scott charged with fraud off of the ballot.
Both John Scotts and a Democratic candidate will appear on the Oakland County November ballot.
John Charles Scott, the student, has retained a lawyer and has a court date Thursday morning.
