DETROIT -

The operator of Joe Louis and Cobo arenas in Detroit is disputing more than $971,000 in unpaid property taxes on the venues.

Olympia Entertainment said Thursday that the taxes "have been accrued to" the company "in what appears to be an error," and that it is incorrectly listed as the property owner on the tax rolls.

Olympia Entertainment is part of Mike Ilitch's stable of companies, which include Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers and the NHL's Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings play in Joe Louis Arena which is leased from the city.

The Detroit Free Press reported earlier that documents show the taxes have been in arrears since 2009.

The Michigan House on Thursday approved legislation to help finance an Ilitch development that would include a new hockey arena.
