The Michigan arm of a nonprofit that aims to provide for and improve the quality of education in Pakistan says it raised about $400,000 at a Detroit-area fundraising event.
The Michigan Chapter of the Citizens Foundation USA hosted its second annual gala Saturday at the Dearborn Inn. It was designed to raise money and awareness for building schools for poor children in Pakistan.
The charity plans for the next school built to be named in honor of Malala Yousufzai. The 15-year-old education activist was shot last month in the head by a Taliban gunman and is being treated at a British hospital.
The Michigan chapter was formed in 2010 and says it has helped build four schools in Pakistan. The U.S. charity said it has established 830 schools overall.
