How it all started in Hamburg Township

Hamburg Township police say it started Friday evening when Livingston County dispatch told officers to be on the lookout for a reckless driver in a black Chevrolet Cavalier traveling westbound on M-36 from Chilson.

Two Hamburg Township officers spotted the vehicle and tried to stop it on M-36 near Carolyn. The driver kept going, speeding westbound on M-36. Officers pursued until the driver stopped in Putnam Township. Officers pulled their vehicles up behind the Cavalier. That's when, police say, the driver switched into reverse and rammed the car into the front of one of the officer's vehicles.

The Cavalier fled all the way to the home on Merrick Drive where the driver drove onto the lawn, exited the vehicle and ran into the house. Two people who knew the driver were already at the home. They exited when he entered.

That's when the standoff started as more police officers, including ones from the Brighton-Hamburg Special Response Team, began to surround the home.

Suspect taken to medical center for evaluation

The suspect is a 28-year-old Ypsilanti resident. He was found hiding in a first-floor bathroom at the Hamburg Township home.

After he was arrested, the man was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor for a medical evaluation. Police said he would be transferred to the Livingston County Jail upon his release from the medical center.

Formal charges are pending.
