Police investigate snowball complaint, kill dog

Police in West Michigan responding to a complaint of teenagers breaking windows with snowballs fatally shot a pit bull that officers say was sent to attack them.

MLive.com reports Grand Rapids police chased two teenagers Tuesday night to a home. Police say the teens went inside and refused to come out.

Police say the dog was let out of the house and its owner ordered it to attack. Officers fired roughly a dozen shots at the dog as it charged them.

Police say an officer, the dog's owner and another person were treated for minor injuries from dog bites.

The two teens involved in the original snowball-related complaint were arrested. An officer at the scene said police would seek malicious destruction of property charges against them. The owner of the dog, who police said ordered the dog to attack the officers, was also arrested after being treated for his injuries.

Charges are expected to include malicious destruction of property against the teens.

Dog shoots owner in Florida

A Florida man was shot and wounded by his dog, who's walked away without charges.

Gregory Dale Lanier, 35, of Frostproof, Fla., and his dog were in his truck Saturday when his dog kicked a loaded gun on the floor, shooting him in the leg, the Highlands Today newspaper reported.

Lanier told authorities he didn't know his .380 pistol was loaded.

Sebring police have ruled the shooting accidental, and Lanier was not seriously injured, according to the Highlands Today.

In December 2011, 78-year-old Billy E. Brown was shot in the thigh by his dog as he drove to a deer hunting spot in Pasco County, according to The Huffington Post.

And this past September, a hunter in France had to have has right hand amputated after his dog shot his gun while apparently attempting to "cuddle" his master, BBC News reported.
