Recall petition for Wayne County Exec. Robert Ficano approved

140,000 signatures must be secured in 90 days

DETROIT The Wayne County Elections Commission on Wednesday approved language for a recall petition against county Executive Robert Ficano.

In order for the recall to appear on a ballot, 140,000 registered voters must sign it within 90 days.

The petition effort was headed by Metro Detroit attorney and former federal prosecutor Robert Convertino.

"It's straightforward, it's unequivocal , it's unambiguous," Convertino said.

But Ficano's attorney, Andrew Richner, said the wording of the petition doesn't meet state standards.

"Instead, we have vague and unclear language," he said.

Ficano has been under public and federal scrutiny since a severance scandal broke involving the county's former economic development head, Turkia Mullin.

Mullin voluntarily left her job with the county in August to become CEO of Detroit Metropolitan Airport, but was given a $200,000 severance package. She and Ficano were criticized about the amount of the payment. Last month, she repaid the after-tax amount of $135,900.

Ficano has said protocols weren't followed in the severance deal. The FBI is investigating, too.

In response, Ficano has issued this statement:

"For many years, the people of Wayne County have placed enormous trust and faith in me, first as Sheriff and now as County Executive. I have personally always worked hard to not betray that trust. Recent events have caused questions to be raised, which I understand. Those responsible for the mistakes which have been made have been held accountable. Looking forward, I renew my commitment to work ethically and in the best interests of our citizens. Working with our new leadership team and the county commission, additional reforms will be enacted so that our people will have faith and confidence in their county government. While today's decision to approve the recall petition language is disappointing, I will continue to work hard day by day to demonstrate to the residents of Wayne County that their trust in me is not misplaced."

The elections commission is made up for Chief Probate Judge Milton Mack, Prosecutor Kym Worthy and Clerk Cathy Garrett.
