The mother was about to tote her 7-year-old and 8-year-old to school when she left them in a running Jeep in her driveway to run back inside her home for something. When she came out, police said she saw a man get into her Jeep. Staniszewski ran after the Jeep and was run over as the man tried to get away. The man later bailed from the Jeep a short distance away as the Jeep. The children in the car were not hurt.

"That guy said when he turned around and saw the kids in the car he said, 'Oh boy, am I in trouble.' And that's when he jumped out," said Staniszewski's mother, Andrea Nowak. "They're pretty traumatized. They want their mom because they had to leave her at the hospital," said Nowak.
