Some of the flares may be visible in residential areas.

Base officials say Airmen conduct a wide variety of training exercises throughout the year, to prepare for various contingencies.

Training with signal flares simulate one possible scenario of how a downed air crew could signal their location to a rescue operation.

The base is home to approximately 1,700 personnel and Airman from the 127th Wing, which fly both the A-10 Thunderbolt II and the KC-135 Stratotanker.

The 127th Wing supports Air Mobility Command, Air Combat Command and Air Force Special Operation Command by providing highly-skilled Airmen to missions domestically and overseas.
