Right now, one of the top candidates for coming in to overhaul the Detroit Police Department is from Cincinnati, Ohio. Sources confirm that Cincinnati Police Chief James Craig has been interviewed for the position and is considered impressive and a top candidate for the Detroit job. He started his career in law enforcement as Detroit police officer in 1977.
However, Craig is not the only candidate. Within the department, Deputy Chief James Tolbert is being looked at. Moreover, there are at least three other candidates in the interview process at this time.
There are no illusions in the emergency manager's office that the police department needs a visionary at the helm to tackle the crime problem in this town.
It's a problem that's been brewing for decades. Of all the appointments EM Kevyn Orr will make during his time in Detroit, this position may be the most critical.
It's being treated as such.
