SOUTHGATE, Mich. -

Students from Davidson Middle School in Southgate were greeted by change Monday on their first day back to school after their classmate, 13-year-old Tyler Nichols took his life in the school's bathroom last week.

Most noticeably, Southgate police officers patrolled the parking lot as hundreds of parents dropped of their students before 8 a.m.

“I told my daughter this school is going to be the safest place anyone can be today,” said Eric Robinson, father of a ninth-grader.

Parents told Local 4 they were comforted by the sight of police.

"I was worried about taking my daughter to school this morning, but after seeing police, I just feel better about things,” said Michelle Borgn, who also has a ninth-grader in the school.

In a meeting with parents Sunday night, Superintendent William Grusecki told parents to expect longer lines getting into the school due to increased security. Multiple items were screened as students entered the building, including back packs.

"These are precautions we are keeping in place for the time being, but I know Davidson Middle School parents do not want their school to become a prison,” Grusecki said.

The school library has been transformed into a crisis center and students can expect additional teachers and counselors to escort them to the center if needed.

"While I can’t get too specific about our security changes, our goal is to try and make our students feel as comfortable as possible,” said Grusecki.
