DETROIT -

Michigan state Rep. Fred Durhal Jr. says he believes he has the financial and political skills to lead Detroit as the city's next mayor.

The 60-year-old democrat is expected to formally announce his candidacy for the mayor on Monday.

He's serving his second term in the Michigan House of Representatives. He has lived in Detroit since he was 6-months-old.

He attended Detroit Public Schools then continued his education at Wayne State University, Wayne County Community College, and the University of Phoenix.

Durhal also serves as the Chair of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus.

The announcement is scheduled to take place at 2 p.m. at the Unity Baptist Church in Detroit.
