State probes death at Detroit adult group home

Woman dies after left outside in heat

DETROIT – The state of Michigan has launched an investigation into the death of a woman at an adult group home in Detroit.

Local 4 Defenders have learned the 58-year-old woman was declared dead shortly after being taken from the home on Lakewood Street on the city's east side.

Sources said the woman had been left sitting outside in the intense summer heat and was not moved inside because she was too heavy.

The Defenders learned the home is one of several owned by Sheryl Carson.

The Defenders uncovered inspection reports revealing several previous violations.

One involved a low food supply.  In another, a staff member allegedly pushed a patient and called the patient an expletive.

Neighbors told the Defenders some residents at the home have wandered the neighborhood asking for food and spare change.

The home on Lakewood Street is properly licensed.  But state authorities said they take this incident seriously and will investigate.

The results of that investigation may be known in about two months.
