A strong winter storm has dumped up to 20 inches of snow in parts of northern Michigan, forcing officials to close some roads and many schools in the Upper Peninsula.
State police say snowdrifts of up to eight feet and 40-mph wind gusts led to the closing of a stretch of M-28 between Marquette and Munising on Wednesday.
It's expected to reopen at 5 p.m.
The Natural Weather Service says 20 inches of new snow fell in Houghton and Delta counties and 14.5 inches in Marquette County.
Parts of southern Michigan also got snow, with the weather service reporting nine inches in Mason County.
Snow, winds and icy temperatures in parts of the western Lower Peninsula prompted some school closings Wednesday.
