DETROIT -

A group of teens are posing as Detroit Public School band members asking for donations around the metro area.

According to Detroit Public Schools, the group says they are fundraising for the Martin Luther King High School band to perform during the summer Olympics in London. However, the teens are not associated with the band.

Apparently the youths have been fraudulently soliciting money at locations like Home Depot on Meyers Road in Detroit and Kroger on Eight Mile Road in Ferndale.

Both the principal of King High School and the band director have been informed about people soliciting money using the band’s name and their scheduled trip to the Olympics. School district officials have contacted both Home Depot and Kroger to report this illegal activity.

If you see people posing as DPS students campaigning for the MLK band, contact DPS police immediately at 313-748-6000.
