US-23 in Genesee County, I-94 in Van Buren County shut down after snowy crashes

Blinding snow, high winds and slick highways have led to several car accidents and deaths in Southeast Michigan.

Authorities in Genesee County say a snow squall has caused a multivehicle accident with several injuries, shutting down U.S. 23 south of Flint.

Genesee County's central dispatch center says the crash closed U.S. 23 in both directions in Grand Blanc Township.

Sources say more than 30 cars are involved in the U.S. 23 accident and 14 people have been taken to area hospitals.

Injuries are believed to be minor.

The highway was reopened in both direction at 4: 30 p.m.

Yet another accident closed parts of Interstate 94 in Van Buren County.

The Van Buren County sheriff's department says eight semis and six cars crashed on I-94, closing the westbound lanes to traffic at Paw Paw.

Authorities say the wreck was caused by the whiteout conditions, as one vehicle started to slow, a chain-reaction crash ensued.

The highway is expected to be shut down until around 6:30 p.m. and drivers are asked to avoid the area by exiting I-94 at Mattawan and getting back on at Lawrence.

At least one semi-truck driver is seriously injured and other minor injuries are reported.

A morning crash also closed part of Interstate I-75 in Detroit. Michigan police say two children and one adult died in the I-75 accident.

The rash of accidents came during a blast of winter weather Thursday.
