Volunteers build playground in Harper Woods

Day-long project creates playground for community

HARPER WOODS, Mich. – More than 200 volunteers spent Saturday building a new playground in Harper Woods.

The day-long project at Starr Academy on Harper Avenue was the work of volunteers from Starr Commonwealth, Foresters and KaBOOM!

 Starr Commonwealth's Global Learning Network helps train professionals in trauma-informed care. Starr Detroit has been working in the Detroit area since 1987 in foster care, youth assistance, substance abuse and transitional living.

 Foresters is the trade name of the Independent Order of Foresters, a fraternal benefit society.

KaBOOM! is a national non-profit dedicated to saving play. It has helped build more than 2,100 playgrounds nationally.

 The Harper Woods playground was designed based on drawings created by students at Starr Academy.

The new playground will serve the 600-plus children attending the school and more than 9,00 children and their families in the Harper Woods community.
