Volunteers help build wooden bleachers at Detroit's Salsinger Park baseball diamond after theft

Thieves stole hundreds of dollars worth of bleachers from Detroit park

DETROIT – After a few days of discovering parts of new bleachers stolen by vandals from Salsinger Park on Detroit's west side, folks at the Sandbar Sports Grill in Harrison Township decided to pitch in and help.

Vandals had stolen the aluminum, three-tiered bleachers surrounding the baseball diamond after just two weeks of being placed into the park.

Deni Bozinovski, owner of the Sandbar Sports Grill, saw our story first on Local 4.  He said he was just sick about the damage at Salsinger Park.

"You know I see the kids out here, they said they postponed all the games, until they got all the bleachers fixed," says Bozinovski.

Bozinovski says he couldn't believe people would rip off the brand new aluminum bleachers just for the cash.  But he said there was a simple solution to beat these thieves - build wooden benches.

Along with a couple of friends, Bozinovski worked on the new wooden bleachers Thursday afternoon.  He said forget the talk, people need to take action to make a difference in Detroit.

"The kids down here just need something positive," says Bozinovski. "I got sick of talking about what we need to do. It's time to take some action."

Bozinovski says even though he lives in Sterling Heights right now, he grew up in Detroit.  He still feels a connection to the city and wanted to do something positive.
