Walmart donates $50,000 to City Year Detroit's dropout prevention program
Walmart Foundation donation will help keep students in Truman High School in Taylor
The Walmart foundation has donated $50,000 to assist with school dropout prevention at Truman High School in Taylor.
The grant will be used for the implementation of City Year Detroit's dropout prevention program at the school. It will assist with the dropout prevention services model known as "Whole School Whole Child" and a team of City Year corps members will serve at Truman High School in the 2012-2013 school year.
City Year Detroit received the $50,000 check during a check presentation ceremony held at the school.
"Every 26 seconds a student drops out of high school in America – and City Year is here to help turn around the school dropout crisis," said City Year Detroit Executive Director Penny Bailer. "City Year’s young adult members – who are near-peers to the students they serve and highly motivated to get results – can help them get back on track. We are deeply grateful to the Walmart Foundation for their generous investment that will continue to support strategies to help City Year AmeriCorps members have the greatest possible impact on the academic success of the students they serve."
The programs focus on various support and activities to ensure students are on the right track to advance to the next grade.
Corp members help students focus on the "ABCs" of student performance. That stands for Attendance, Behavior, and Course comprehension in English and math.
“The Walmart Foundation is very pleased to be supporting City Year Detroit, and is committed to helping those in need in the communities where we serve,” said Steve Satterfield, Market Manager, Walmart. “Through this grant, we are hopeful that residents will support the education reform and dropout prevention efforts of City Year Detroit.”
The contribution to City Year Detroit was made possible through the Walmart Foundation’s Michigan State Giving Program. Through this program, the Walmart Foundation supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better.
