MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. -

A Detroit-area man convicted of an abuse charge in the death of his ill and bedridden 360-pound wife has been sentenced to probation.

Michael Brooks pleaded guilty in January to a felony charge of abuse of a vulnerable adult.

His wife, Yolanda Reese-Brooks, died of morbid obesity and other injuries in October.

Macomb County Judge Peter Maceroni on Wednesday said that because Brooks doesn't have a criminal history, had passed all drug and alcohol tests cleanly and is attending parenting classes, he would place him on two years of probation. Maceroni also ordered Brooks to undergo a mental evaluation.

Prosecutors say Michael Brooks was his 40-year-old wife's primary caretaker after a 2011 auto crash crushed her pelvis and ruptured her bladder. She weighed about 360 pounds when an emergency crew wearing protective gear removed her from an apartment in Warren.

The couple's four children are in the care of Brooks' sister and he will continue to be allowed to visit with them.
