WYOMING, Mich. -

A 4-year-old West Michigan boy has been killed after apparently slipping beneath the tires of a high school homecoming float.

Police say the Wyoming boy, whose name was not released, was near the tractor-like vehicle just before 6 p.m. Friday when the accident occurred. He later died at a Grand Rapids hospital.

Wyoming police Lt. Scott Beckman says the boy "apparently was walking along or near one of the floats and had either stumbled or was pulled under the float tire."

The parade was part of homecoming events for Wyoming High School and preceded the 7 p.m. football game against Grand Rapids Creston. About 1,000 people had been watching the parade through the school's neighborhood.

The accident is under investigation.
