The trial continues Tuesday for Detroit officer

Officer Joseph Weekley charged in 2010 shooting death of 7-year-old girl during raid at home

DETROIT – The trial continues Tuesday for the Detroit officer charged in the 2010 shooting of a 7-year-old girl.

The courtroom has been filled with emotion as family members mourn their loss.

Mertilla Jones told the jury on Monday that she was on the same couch where her granddaughter Aiyana Jones was asleep.

The 7-year-old girl was only about 2 feet from the door where officer Joseph Weekley entered.

"I heard a lot of commotion and the front window like exploded," the grandmother testified.

Weekley fired the deadly shot three seconds after the stun grenade was thrown through the window. Mertilla Jones testified she had rolled off of the couch and was on the floor when the shot hit Aiyana in the head.

"He pulled the trigger ... and I seen the light leave out of her eyes ... and blood out of her mouth," Mertilla Jones said.

She left the courtroom for several minutes before continuing. Weekley says he fired after the grandmother hit or bumped his submachine gun.

When asked if she assaulted the police officer or if she knocked his gun, Mertilla Jones said no.

The Special Response Team was there to arrest a man connected to the murder of a 17-year-old. Jones was asked to describe what the officers were wearing.

"Black masks. Combat boots," she said.

"Detroit SWAT" was an A&E program that featured Weekley and other SRT members. A crew was shooting video for another show the night Aiyana was killed.
