Dozens rescued when fire breaks out at senior housing building in Allen Park

1 killed at Leo Paluch Senior Citizen Housing on Champaign Road

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – One person was killed and dozens others rescued early Monday morning when a fire broke out at a senior citizen apartment building in Allen Park.

Allen Park Fire Chief Douglas LaFond said the fire at Leo Paluch Senior Citizen Housing on Champaign Road broke out just before 5 a.m. His firefighters, with the help of firefighters from six surrounding communities, used ladders to rescue about 30 people who were trapped. LaFond said his own mother was one of the residents who was rescued.

LaFond said between six and 12 residents were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and other minor injuries.

"Most of them are just fine," he said.

However, LaFond said one resident did die. "It's definitely a tragedy," he said.

The remaining residents were taken to the nearby library or went home with other family members.

"We're going to make plans to find shelter, either at one of the local hotels or their friends and family," said Andrew Hill, executive director of the Allen Park Housing Commission.

LaFond credited the installation of fireproof doors and attack breaks in the building for helping curb the dangers.

"The addition of those fire doors a few years ago saved a lot of lives today," he said.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
