The upcoming end of the school year will be a sad time for students and alumni of Detroit’s Northwestern High School.
Alumni and friends of the school staged a protest on Wednesday.
They oppose the closing of Northwestern which will be replaced by Detroit Collegiate Preparatory High School.
That school will admit students through applications.
Those outside the school told Local 4 the protest is not about them and their memories.
"Children need this school,” said Northwestern High School alumni president. “This school means a lot to the whole community. To take this public school away and put in a self-governing charter school with an application process will be something different."
In its 100 years, Northwestern High School has produced distinguished alumni including Willie Horton, Congressman John Conyers and federal appeals judge Damon Keith.
