LENOX TOWNSHIP, Mich. – An Anchor Bay High School student was taken into custody Wednesday morning after allegedly posting a threatening picture and tweet on his Twitter account.
The tweet canceled Wednesday's classes as hundreds of students were kept home for their own safety.
St. Clair County sheriff's Deputy Larry Fajardo -- Anchor Bay's school resource officer -- received information about the tweet early Tuesday afternoon. The information was given to him by Anchor Bay Director of Secondary Education Joe McDonald.
McDonald received word about the tweet from a parent of an Anchor Bay student. The tweet showed a picture of the student holding what appeared to be a sawed-off shotgun.
The caption to the photo said, "I can't wait for school today."
When the information was received, the police immediately took action.
"As is the case with all threats, they are taken seriously and investigated by local law enforcement," Anchor Bay Schools Superintendent Leonard Woodside said.
It was determined that the tweet came from a 15-year-old sophomore who lives in Lenox Township.
Detectives from the Sheriff's Office were called in to assist in the investigation. A search warrant for the student's home on 27 Mile Road was drawn up by detectives and signed by Judge MIchael Hulewicz.
Police went to the home Tuesday and waited for the student to return, then executed a search warrant.
Police found several long guns and airsoft guns. The student told police the gun in the picture was an airsoft gun, not a real gun.
The 15-year-old was taken into custody and the superintendent said classes were canceled just in case.
Anchor Bay schools will be open for classes on Thursday.
