Ann Arbor looking at ways to control deer population

Issue will be discussed Thursday at public meeting

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Ann Arbor officials are inviting residents to attend a second hearing to address lethal and non-lethal ways of controlling the overpopulation of deer in the area.

City officials have been seeking different options for controlling the city's deer population since last year, after residents expressed their concerns about deer causing damage to plants, gardens and the amount of deer-related car accidents.

Some local residents feel the best way to control the deer is by lethal action.

"I think they should be shot. You have to eradicate them," said Hans Klett.

But officials are also considering non-lethal ways to control the deer, such as creating more signage to warn motorists about deer, contraception options and new laws against feeding deer.

The public hearing is Thursday at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Slauson Middle School.
