Argument between neighbors ends with gunfire in west Detroit

1 man in critical condition after witnesses say argument on Ohio Street turned violent

DETROIT – Neighbors in the 9100 block of Ohio Street say they always heard arguing.

One witness said the suspect was waiting to shoot and he talked about guns a lot.

The witness said the victim asked her to call police just seconds before being shot twice in the chest.

"The two guys argue everyday across the street. They got into an argument and the guy pulled a gun out and he shot him in broad daylight, in front of me and my daughter," said Melinda Juide, who called police.

Juide said the victim was walking his two dogs just before lunchtime when an argument with his neighbor escalated.

"I don't know what happened, what went wrong. They had an argument and he shot him. There wasn't even more said, he shot him," said Juide.

Bleeding profusely, the man stumbled to his neighbor's porch where he collapsed.

"I heard three gunshots. I hit the floor. He came to the front of my home and then my neighbor fell out in front of my house. I called 911. They told me what to do -- put pressure on his gunshot wounds," said Felicia Watkins.

When police arrived they first had to catch the victim's dogs. One was barking on the front lawn while the other ran down the street.

The suspect stayed at the scene and was placed in the back of a police car.

"It's scary, because like I said I was out with mine in the yard. So it was very scary," said Juide. "He could have shot him when he was walking over to me."

The victim was rushed to Sinai-Grace Hospital where he is in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his chest.
