Argument leads to shooting in Detroit

49-year-old man in critical condition after being shot in chest

DETROIT – A 49-year-old man is in critical condition after an argument led to a shooting on Detroit's east side.

The victim, who neighbors identified as Dennis, was shot around 2 p.m. Saturday while walking home. Police said Dennis and another man got into an argument and Dennis was shot once in the chest.

Local 4 spoke to a woman who called 911. She said she looked out her window and saw Dennis on the ground.

"I just saw him blow the horn and say, 'Hey,' and kept on going and that was it. Then when I come back they said he got shot," said Barbara George, who knows Dennis. "He was trying to help somebody out and I guess the guy didn't want to be helped out and shot him."

"I heard a noise and heard somebody crying," one woman said. "I came out there and I had seen the person lying on the ground."

Neighbors said a shooting on Minnesota Street between Marx and Orleans isn't shocking, but it's hard to believe the victim was Dennis, a man they said volunteered at a nearby church and donated food to those in need.

"It's really shocking that he was shot," the woman said. "He's a really nice guy. He's got kids and everything else, a really beautiful mother."

Neighbors said the area has changed dramatically over the last few years.

"Everybody in this neighborhood knows each other, so I don't understand why we have to keep going through this crap over and over again," said George.

Dennis and the shooter knew one another. Police have a good idea who they're looking for.

Dennis was listed in critical condition Saturday evening. Dennis' mother is with him and is hoping he pulls through.
