Man charged in attempted carjacking of woman in Roseville

Police: Man had fully-loaded Uzi sub-machine gun

ROSEVILLE, Mich. – Police arrested a man on Monday morning after they say he used a gun to rob a Roseville woman and attempted to steal her car.

Authorities say a 37-year-old woman walked out of her home in the 26000 block of Janet Court at around 5:40 a.m. when the man grabbed her from behind. He put one hand over her mouth while holding a gun with his other hand.

Police say the man took the woman's purse and keys and warned her not to yell. While he fumbled with her purse, the woman squirmed free and began screaming.

The robber jumped into the woman's car, which the woman started remotely from her home, and tried to drive from the scene. But without the ignition key, the robber was unable to start the car, so he fled the area on foot.

The woman's husband heard her screams and chased the man on foot, but stopped after the robber turned and pointed an Uzi style machine pistol at him, police say.

According to authorities, the man was found on Gratiot Avenue near Ten Mile Road. Officers arrested him without incident and recovered the fully-loaded Uzi sub-machine gun, which matched the description of the two victims.

Police say the man is 19-year-old Dietrich Sanders, of Detroit. He was arraigned Monday on charges including attempted carjacking (felony) and felony firearm. He is being held at the Macomb County Jail on a $1 million bond.
