The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office has released the names of a 15-year-old driver and his mother who were killed in a crash involving a semi-truck in Burtchville Township.
Sheriff Tim Donnellon said Jerrod Robert Smith, who had a learner's permit, was driving an SUV around 3:30 p.m. Thursday on Burtch Road when he stopped at the intersection of Lakeshore Road and turned left into the path of the semi.
The crash propelled the family's car and semi-truck across the centerline and into a sign at Duffy’s Tavern, located on the southeast corner of the intersection. A car parked in that lot was also hit.
Smith, and his 52-year-old mother, Karen, died. The teen's 21-year-old sister, Kaitlyn Smith, was in the back seat and was taken to a hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and released.
The driver of the semi was identified as a 72-year-old man from Almont. He refused medical treatment. The truck was hauling a tanker of milk.
Donnellon said the Smiths were heading to Lakeport State Park to go camping.
The 15-year-old was a freshman at Walled Lake Western High School.
"Walled Lake Schools has the Smith family in our thoughts and prayers. The entire community is grieving over the death of Jerrod and his mother. Jerrod was an incredible student and accomplished soccer and basketball player," said district spokeswoman Judy Evola.
