DETROIT -

Law enforcement officials in Detroit and Windsor are gearing up for the annual Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon on Sunday.

“Within days of the Boston incident, we began working with local, state, federal and Canadian officials to work on how we might improve our security plan,” said race director Rich Harshbarger.

He said an “extraordinary effort” was underway to ensure the day would fun and safe.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig there hasn’t been a threat made toward the marathon, and that all safety guidelines are precautionary.

Runners will be required to use clear bags when they check their gear, which will then be marked and stored by race numbers.

Craig suggested runners make sure they park in a paid lot and lock any car doors. He also suggested runners come up with a meeting place for friends and family before the race.

Strollers, bicycles, pets and rollerblades are not allowed on the race route.
