Auto accident kills U of M doctor

Eastbound lanes of I-94 closed at Zeeb Road in Scio Township after crash

WASHTENAW COUNTY, Mich. – A fatal car accident shut down the eastbound lanes of I-94 at Zeeb Road in Scio Township Saturday morning.  Dr. Steven Gradwohl was killed in  the crash.

The 51-year-old man, from Ann Arbor, was a doctor of internal medicine for the University of Michigan Health System, according to Michigan State Police.

Witnesses tell troopers that a red Volkswagen Cabrio slowly drifted from the far left lane across three lanes of traffic,hitting a ditch then crashing into the bridge abutment for the Zeeb Road overpass.

The vehicle started to burn and became engulfed in flames. Passing motorists stopped to help. Gradwohl was pulled from the car and a good samaritan performed CPR.

When troopers arrived they tried to revive the doctor using a defibrillator. However, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver may have lost consciousness for unknown reasons. Alcohol is not suspected in this crash. An autopsy is pending.
