Back to school peace rally held in New Center

Community members promoting peace, supporting education

DETROIT – Hundreds of people attended an event in Detroit Sunday involving a peace rally and back to school giveaways.

The Back to School Peace Rally was held at the Metropolitan United Methodist Church on Woodward Avenue.

Children lined up for train rides, jumped in a bouncy-castle, and stocked up on school supplies.

Local residents were outraged by the death and crime over the past year and worked to organize an event promoting peace, supporting education, and making sure kids are living in a safe community.

"We are building our community back up and we are building our village," said Nada Dickinson. "We do love and car for one another regardless of your race or your background. We are one."

Children left the peace rally with back packs filled with school supplies, ready for the semester ahead.
