Bail bondsmen grab wrong men after I-94 crash in Detroit

3 young men mistakenly rushed by bail bondsmen after crash on I-94

DETROIT – The crash happened Tuesday night on Interstate 94 at Van Dyke.

The driver, 24-year-old Ben Caulton, was rear-ended by another car. Caulton had 20-year-old Devonte Dixon in the passenger seat and 16-year-old Justin James in the back seat.

"The man got up and ran to our car and he apologized and said he was sorry," said Caulton.

What happened next might shock you.

Two men dressed in all black pulled the young men out of the car and sat them on the ground in the middle of I-94. Then Detroit police showed up. An officer took Caulton to the ground.

So, who were the two men in the black with weapons drawn? Detroit police say they are bail bondsmen who just happened to be in the area at the time of the crash.

Investigators say the Detroit police officers may have thought the two men were law enforcement, too. However, they never asked. Michigan State Police showed up and come to find out, none of the young men had a warrant or prior criminal records. The crash wasn't their fault so why were they bombarded and treated like serious criminals?

Detroit police officials say they are investigating the video and trying to identify their officers who responded to the crash. They are investigating whether there was any negligence on their part.

Police say the actions from the bondsmen will not be tolerated. Investigating are working to track them down.
