Police got an emergency call just before 6 a.m. Wednesday from the home in the 15000 block of Sorrento Street.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said shots were fired.

"He's become increasingly more aggressive. In fact, at some point during our negotiation efforts he fired a shot at our SRT vehicle, striking it while police officers were inside," said Craig.

No one was injured.

Craig said they were using several different ways to try to get the man out of the home safely. He said DTE Energy cut the power to the house.

Police said the man's mother and daughter told them that they had tried to get the man to go to a hospital for treatment when he stepped on some glass, but the situation escalated when the man got a gun.

Everyone was able to get out of the home safely, but the man refused to come out.

Police said he does have a mental condition.

Chief Craig said negotiators were using a loud speaker to communicate with the man.

"The negotiations range from introducing the voice of his daughter, his granddaughter, and then finally I had a chance to introduce my voice and plead with the subject to come out, that he would not be harmed, that his family and the Detroit Police Department care for him," Craig said.
