Belle Isle: New management, new rules

State park rules are now being enforced at Belle Isle

DETROIT – Belle Isle is now under new management, operating as a Michigan state park.

As part of the park's makeover, official at Belle Isle are enforcing rules that weren't enforced before.

Michigan State Police took over from the Detroit Police Department in February and they are running a tighter ship on the island.

"I think in general the island is safe, as with anywhere there is going to be certain people who come on the island, but we are going to do our best to keep it as family-friendly and safe as possible," said First Lt. Phil Menna.

Police will be watching for people violating traffic laws, playing loud music and drinking alcohol.

"It makes me feel very safe because I know if I run into trouble or need some assistance that assistance is available for me," said Farmington Hills resident Winson Wang.

Park hours are from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., which were not enforced before but now under new management they will be enforced.
