Bishop Charles Ellis' brother-in-law shot to death at home

Detroit religious leader's close family member is victim of deadly shooting

DETROIT – A close family member of one of Detroit's most influential religious leaders was shot to death Monday night inside his home.

Dwayne Green, the brother-in-law of Bishop Charles Ellis, of Greater Grace Temple, was killed.

"He was a family man, a great guy and this is going to an awful void that has to be filled," Ellis said.

Ellis said Green's cousins found him laying on the ground bleeding from a gunshot wound.

"Dwayne was more than a brother, he was our maintenance manager for 15 years here and we're going to miss him," Ellis said.  "I am going to need some time, I am so used to helping others through these painful times. Sometimes the physician needs healing himself and all of us, especially my wife and her father, need time to wrap our heads around this."

Green leaves behind a son who attends Jackson College and a daughter who lives in Atlanta.

Bishop Ellis tweeted this Monday night:

@bishopche3: "Pray for My wife Crisette & fam. Her brother shot dead a few hours ago at home in apparent break-in. He supervised our church maint staff."
