DETROIT - Bob Bashara has just been moved to the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee, Mich., not far from Traverse City.
Oaks is a level 4 prison, one level below maximum security. Bashara is now housed with almost 200 other male inmates.
There are single cells available here and also a higher education program, opportunities to participate in various clubs, events and intramural sports.
Bashara was sentenced in December to a minimum of 80 months in prison and a maximum of 20 years for hiring a hit man to kill the person suspected of killing his wife Jane.
The state parole board will determine when to release Bashara.
Russ Marlin, a spokesperson with the Michigan Department of Corrections spoke to Local 4 about the move.
Those close to Bashara are saying he had hoped he would be sent to a prison closer to Detroit, allowing his family members to drive only a short distance for visits.
Instead the drive will be more like four hours north.

This prison is in Manistee the Oaks Correctional Facility is also the same prison former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sent after he was found to be in violation of probation.
Kilpatrick was later moved to Milan, closer to Metro Detroit.
It's unclear at this point if Bashara will request a transfer or if he'll stay put.
