Second mistress details lurid affair with Bob Bashara, judge calls case 'unusual, bizarre'

Bob Bashara will stand trial on murder charge for wife's death

DETROIT – Bob Bashara will stand trial on a murder charge for his wife's 2012 death.

After 30 witnesses and five days of lurid testimony, District Court Judge Kenneth King ruled Friday that the Grosse Pointe Park man would face a trial on a first-degree murder charge.

King called the case "unusual" and "bizarre."

"When you deal with scum, chances are you're pretty much scum, too," King said.

In the fifth and last day of testimony, the judge said they could have skipped this long hearing and gone straight to trial.

"It almost sounds like the defendant, if those allegations are to be believed, thought he was mafia or something he was watching on TV or a movie, putting hits on people," said King.

But, before that ruling came down yet another mistress took the stand detailing her close ties to Bob and his family too.

Venita Porter wore lime green shoes and black pants on the stand. She testified she became Bob's S&M partner.

"He was looking for someone to see as a submissive and I needed food and shoes for my children and we met in Southgate at a Red Robin," said Porter.

Perhaps more startling was the testimony that Porter became a very public part of the Bashara family.

"Yes I went to church with Jane and Bob every Sunday. I went to Rotary with Bob, I went to community projects, went to the movies with him and his mother," she said in court.

Porter said she lived in the basement dungeon Bashara owned and even painted it black for him. She said Bob found another mistress and tossed her aside one night.

"As I was cleaning out everything I owned in anger I told him I couldn't see him, I told him I thought I was having some kind of heart attack, could I at lease stay the night. I told him I have no place to go and he kicked me out," Porter said.

She also testified several months later Bashara showed up at her door after his other mistress left him. He wanted to rekindle their relationship.

Porter said they went for a walk in a nearby park and Bashara kissed her, she said she grabbed a razor knife she had in her pocket fearing for her life.

Shortly thereafter she says police arrested Bob.

Jane Bashara was found strangled to death on Jan. 25, 2012, inside her SUV that was parked in a Detroit alley, a few miles from the couple's home.

Joseph Gentz, a handyman who worked for Bob Bashara, has pleaded guilty to killing her, but saying he did so at her husband's behest.

Bob Bashara already is serving up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to trying to hire someone to kill Gentz in jail.

The court heard from Bob Bashara's mistresses, family members, friends and business partners.
