Boil water alert lifted for Washington, Shelby townships

DWSD repaired air valve in water main

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The boil water alert for Washington and Shelby Townships was lifted Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

Washington Township officials said the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department was repairing an air valve in their 96-inch water main located in the township.

DWSD closed off water to the area they were repairing in the township, so pressures droped significantly in the DWSD and Township mains as well, according to Washington Township officials.

The repair also impacted the communities of Romeo, Shelby Township, Rochester Hills and the city of Rochester.

"DWSD will be testing the water and advising its customers when it is safe to lift the boil water advisory," township officials said. "The earliest the advisory may be lifted is in the early morning hours of Monday morning or until samples indicate the water is safe to drink."

Residents were asked not to drink water from the tap without boiling it first during a boil water advisory.

"Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water," officials said. "Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and preparing food."

Residents who have a refrigerator that has a water/ice system connected to the water in the house were asked to not use the ice or water made during the alert period until the advisory had been lifted.

"It is recommended that you flush this line and discard ice made during the boil alert. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water," officials said. "Continue using boiled or bottled water until further notice. Once the advisory is lifted, flush the lines until the water runs clear."
