Brighton Township man charged with fleeing from police

William Smith accused of driving over curbs to get away from police

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 48-year-old man is facing charges for allegedly fleeing police and driving with a suspended license.

Bloomfield Township police said they were called to the parking lot of the Andiamo restaurant off Telegraph Road on the morning of Aug. 3 for the report of a driver who may be intoxicated or on drugs.

When officers tried to approach the driver, who was sitting in his car, the driver took off.

Police said officers tried to block the exits to the parking lot, but the driver went over curbs and medians to get onto Telegraph.

Officers from Bloomfield Township, Franklin, Farmington Hills and Novi police departments were part of a chase with the driver -- but the chase was ultimately stopped for safety reasons.

Using the license plate information, police were able to identify the driver as William Smith of Brighton Township.

He was arrested Wednesday at his home.

Smith was charged with fleeing and eluding police and driving with a suspended license.
