Broken Detroit water main floods Livernois, Grand River area

Water department executes emergency shutoff to stop flooding

DETROIT – A broken water main flooded the area of Livernois and Grand River Avenue Wednesday morning on Detroit's west side.

Part of Livernois and the Interstate 96 service drive were under several inches of water. The water has receded, but not completely.

Traffic has been passing through.

A 16-inch water main busted, said a spokesperson with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD). Crews executed an emergency shutoff to stop the flooding.

Water invaded the nearby Shell gas station. A gas station employee told Local 4 he called DWSD as soon as he noticed the flowing water and was on hold with the department for an hour as water creeped toward the shop.

A DWSD spokesperson told Local 4 a crew was already in the area and spotted the break. That crew called it in and within an hour they were working to shut off the water, according to DWSD.
