Canfield Arena in Dearborn Heights closed due to safety concerns

DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. – Without warning, the Canfield Arena in Dearborn Heights has been closed after an inspection found exposed electrical wires and only one emergency exit.

It is unclear how long the problems at the Canfield Arena have been going on, but the building is popular for its skating rink and each year thousands of students take their placement exams there.

"I wish these were issues that were looked at beforehand; a little foresight could've prevented all this," said Karl Richardson of Cainfield LLC.

Canfield LLC leased the arena for almost two years and say they have invested close to a $100,000  in renovations.

"It's sad, put a lot of work into this building and a lot of people care about the building." Richardson said.

The building violations came to light when a Florida-based circus applied for a permit to operate at the arena today and Saturday. Investigators found that the facility was unsafe.

It is unclear when the arena was last inspected before these recent developments.
