Cash Advance clerk's killer sought 1 year later

Chelsea Small shot to death

TAYLOR, Mich. – One year ago a man, captured on surveillance video, walked into the Cash Advance America on Telegraph Road in Taylor a little after noon. He shot and killed the 30 year old clerk, Chelsea Small, a mother of two young sons and took off with what money he could grab. Police have been searching for him ever since.

"Am I in a hurry to find him? No," said Debi Kamins, Chelsea Small's mother. "I want to find him, (but) it's not going to change, it's not going to bring her back. I want the police department to do every step that they need to do, in the correct way, however it needs to be done. I fully support Taylor (Police Department). Do what you have to do because I know it will happen."

Chelsea's mom has been holding it together for the past year, especially for her daughter's two young sons.

"It' s been a hard year," she said. "Sometimes days' speed by, other times they drag with such a heavy weight."

Kamins said she can't stand to watch crime dramas on TV anymore. They become all too real when your own life has become a crime drama, she said.

Wednesday there will be a candlelight vigil for her daughter, who is never is really that far away in her mother's mind.

"When I set Thanksgiving dinner I set an extra plate," Kamins said. "She's included (and) is always. Until we meet again it is never goodbye."

Wednesday's vigil will take place at 8229 Telegraph Road in Taylor, starting at 6:30pm.

Anyone with any information that could lead to the arrest of her killer is asked to call the Taylor Police Department at 734-287-6611. The reward offered to track down Small's killer is $35,500.
