Celebrating 100 years of National Parks

On August 25, 2016, The National Park Service will celebrate 100 years of preservation.

The actual centennial birthday of NPS is at the end of August, but the celebration has been going on all year. The NPS has been offering discounts and hosting special events year round to promote this special milestone and attendance is at an all time high.

The National Park Service urges you to get out and explore our nations parks all over the country. They've even thrown in some incentive. On August 25-28, The National Park Service birthday weekend, NPS will offer free admission to their 400 plus National Parks around the United States.

The National Park Service was created on August 25, 1916. The first park to be officially recognized in Michigan was Isle Royale, on April 3, 1940 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Today, Michigan has 5 NPS units officially recognized by the National Park Service. Two National Lakeshores, a National Park, a National Historical Park, a National Heritage Area and a National Battlefield Park. These protected areas draw people to Michigan from around the country.

These parks play a pivotal role in the stimulating local economies and promoting tourism in Michigan. Creating about 3,300 jobs in Michigan, ranging from camping to retail. The visitor spending at National Parks in Michigan is trending upward. In 2014, there was 173.1 million dollars earned by these parks. In 2015, it spiked to just over 204 million dollars.
